When I threw his favorite ball diagonally into Lake Michigan, Elvis, my Welsh corgi, wanted to retrieve it as quickly as possible. So instead of swimming directly to the ball, he ran down the beach a ways before jumping in. Using calculus, we will determine whether Elvis found the optimal route. This talk is interactive and designed to be enjoyed by a general audience.
